Merstham

A historic village north of Redhill at the foot of the North Downs, with a quarrying heritage and its own railway station.

Merstham is a village to the north of Redhill, within the borough of Reigate & Banstead, sitting at the foot of the North Downs where the M25 and M23 motorways meet. It has a long history tied to quarrying and transport.

## History

Merstham was an important source of building stone and firestone from the Middle Ages, and later of lime. The Surrey Iron Railway — one of the earliest public railways in the world — was extended to Merstham in 1805 to carry stone and lime. The old village around Quality Street retains a number of historic listed buildings.

## The Village Today

Modern Merstham includes both the historic old village and 20th-century housing, with local shops, schools and Merstham railway station on the Redhill to London line. Its position beside the motorway network makes it a convenient commuter base.

## Getting Around

Merstham station provides direct trains towards London and Redhill, and the village sits immediately beside junction 8 of the M25 and the M23, giving fast access to Gatwick Airport and the wider motorway network.
